Description:

Ancient Near East, northern Iran, Persia, Nishapur, Kashan, ca. 12th century CE. A wheel-thrown pottery bowl displaying layers of lustrous glaze in an intense cobalt blue hue. The hemispherical bowl rests upon a squat circular foot and features a flared body with a thin rim that surrounds the deep basin. The basin walls are decorated with an enclosed band of curvilinear sgraffito motifs that are brought forth with darker glazing and flow across the surfaces. Scholars believe that sgraffito ware developed in Coptic Egypt around the 5th or 6th century CE. Using a sharp tool, an artist would incise motifs into the vessel body so that the lines appeared to be painted the color of the pottery itself. Size: 7" W x 3.1" H (17.8 cm x 7.9 cm)
