Description:

Western Europe, England or Germany, Medieval period, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A fine pair of forged-iron equestrian spurs with spiked rowels held within thin shanks. The arched heelbands of each spur terminate in protruding tabs with either two perforated strap holes or a singular openwork slot. The spur with the moving rowel has etched linear motifs along the heelbands that create a personalized presentation, and lustrous patina envelops each item. Size of largest (immobile rowel): 5" L x 3.625" W (12.7 cm x 9.2 cm)

  • Condition: Rowel on one spur is encrusted to shank and is immobile, and rowel of other spur has losses to a couple of prongs. Both items have bending to heelbands, shanks, strap buckles, and rowels, with light encrustations, and softening to incised details. Light earthen deposits and wonderful patina throughout.
