Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Majaphait Java, ca. 12th century CE. A delightful leaded-bronze bell with an elephant finial. The bell dome has an upturned lip which mimics the architectural shapes of traditional Indonesian roofs. The handle forms a lateral opening for suspension. At the top is the elephant finial upon a lotus shaped pedestal. The elephant is quite detailed with incised eyes, wrinkles, and a decorative floral cloth covering his head and back. Indian elephants were domesticated to serve as work animals for moving heavy loads, transportation, pulling wagons, and other tasks. They were ridden during ceremonies and festivals, and bells such as this example would adorn the elephants and announce their arrival. A wonderful example with the original clapper that still emits a nice loud tone! Size: 5" W x 6.25" H (12.7 cm x 15.9 cm)
