Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A stunning gilded bronze head of Buddha wearing a dramatic crown. Cast in the unmistakable Khmer style, Buddha looks downward with a serene face. He has elongated earlobes and a tall, pointed ushnisha above a lotus-flower crown. Size: 2.15" W x 3.75" H (5.5 cm x 9.5 cm); 6.5" H (16.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Alex Cooper Auctioneers; ex-private USA collection belonging to a WWII veteran who was stationed in Thailand, acquired in the 1940s

  • Condition: Head is a fragment from a larger sculpture. The features and form are still in nice condition, with much of the gilt remaining. The bronze underneath has a pretty deep green patina.
