Western Europe, Italy, Medieval Period, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A rare fragment of a marble Corinthian capital boasting scrolling and phytomorphic motifs, as well as a pair of green glass inlays - remnants from an elaborate form of glass and stone inlay decoration typical of Medieval Italy known as Cosmati or Cosmatesque. The style is named after the Cosmati; a Roman family of skillful architects, sculptors, and mosaic workers who developed a technique of opus sectile formed of small triangle and rectangles of colored stones and glass mosaics set into stone matrices or encrusted upon stone surfaces.
