Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Near East, Seljuk (Seljuq) Empire, ca. 11th to 12th century CE. A stunning hammered-leaded copper bowl presenting a flat, circular base and straight walls that rise to an annular flared rim over a shallow basin, all decorated with ornate etched designs. The basin of the ancient dish is skillfully adorned by a central tondo of a winged bull with the head of a human, perhaps a lamassu or a sphynx, enveloped in a swirling vegetal motif. A lovely band comprised of 4 segments of Kufic script alternating with 4 circular symbols surrounds the tondo, followed by an additional register of curved striations. The top of the rim is also embellished by 6 strips Kufic script with 6-wheel motifs, while the exterior wall boasts 6 more banners of script and 6 tondos of 3 differing types: a circular symbol, a cross, and a quadruped. Size: 6.75" in diameter x 1.125" H (17.1 cm x 2.9 cm)
