North Africa to Middle East, Islamic culture, ca. 12th century CE. A wheel-thrown pottery bowl of a sizable form displaying vibrant black and red hues atop the cream ground. The interior of the bowl features a graceful antelope that stands with one foreleg extended and presents with an ornately decorated body, a pointed tail, and a raised head bearing a large pair of horns. The exterior features black and red foliate patterns along the rim, and the area surrounding the foot is undecorated. Size: 9.75" W x 4.125" H (24.8 cm x 10.5 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired in August 2008; ex-private Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, UK collection; ex-private collection of a London gentleman, acquired on the London art market in the 1950s

  • Condition: Light encrustations along foot, exterior, and interior, with light fading to original pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Nice earthen deposits and remains of pigment throughout. Great craquelure to glaze.
