Description:

Indonesia, Central Javanese period, ca. 12th century CE. A bronze standing Indonesian Buddha figurine, presenting the Abhaya have no fear' mudra, a gesture made with the Buddha's right hand raised with arm bent and palm facing outward. The Buddha stands atop a double lotus pedestal which is in turn atop a two tiered base. A beautiful work of spiritual art with stunning green and brown patina! Size: 10" x 2-3/4" x 2-1/2" (25.4 x 7 x 6.4 cm)

The word abhaya when translated from Sanskrit means fearlessness; subsequently, the abhaya mudra symbolizes peace, protection, and the dispelling of fear. According to Buddhist teachings, the historic Buddha made this mudra immediately following his attainment of enlightenment. Some time later, an angry elephant was about to attack Buddha, when he held up his hand in the 'half no fear' gesture to calm the elephant.
