Description:

Europe, likely France, Medieval period, ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A lovely gilt silver ring featuring a large, annular signet incised with the image of a stylized fleur de lis surrounded by a scrolling, vine-like border. The prominent face is flanked by 2 teardrop shaped shoulders bearing additional fleurs de lis leading to the thick band. The fleur de lis can be traced back to the early Medieval period, when it first appeared as a heraldic motif and as a decorative device in illuminated manuscripts. The symbol is most closely associated with the French monarchy, who incorporated the emblem in their heraldry from the 13th century onward. Size of face: 0.9" Diameter (2.3 cm); Ring: 1" Exterior Diameter (2.5 cm); US ring size: 12.5; silver quality: 72 to 96%; weight: 19.4 grams
