Description:

Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A wonderful bronze mirror featuring a relief of a deity on the verso. Shown from the waist up, the god holds both hands together in the Anjali mudra as a pair of lotus buds curve up from either shoulder. A pair of huge ears flank his stylized visage which is comprised of large eyes, a straight nose, and a smile, all crowned by a top bun. The figure is surrounded by an annular border of petal motifs and a twisted rope periphery. Size: 2.8" W x 4.4" H (7.1 cm x 11.2 cm); 5.2" H (13.2 cm) on included custom stand.

The Khmer culture existed between the 9th and 15 centuries in nowadays Cambodia. Influenced by Buddhism and primitive nature religions they produced a remarkable esthetic still admired today. Aside from stone and wood they were master metalworkers and created beautiful bronze objects. This bronze mirror is a good example. Over the centuries it has acquired a attractive patina which accentuates the simple perfection of the form.
