Description:

Native American, Midwestern United States, Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, and Ohio, Archaic to Eastern Woodland, ca. 100 BCE to 1500 CE. A collection of stone and pottery tools and pendants in a great variety of forms for various use. The pottery mushroom shaped piece is a potter's anvil for sculpting vessels. The 3 stone teardrop shaped items are plummets and the 2 stones and a pottery spherical are probably fishing weights with pecked surface and incised grooves. Two rounded stones have circular bore holes from use as cupstones or pitted cobbles. The there is also a tan discoidal, a pendant with a drill hole, and an unusual stone with a lobed profile that tapers to a point. Size (largest fishing weight): 3" L x 1.5" Diameter (7.6 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection, ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970's and earlier

  • Condition: Surface pitting nicks and chips. Losses to end of lobed point and abrasions to pottery anvil. Restoration with pottery to concaved rectangular fishing weight. Find sites and old inventory numbers written on several. Overall great condition.
