Description:

Near East, Seljuk Dynasty, ca. 11th century CE. A cast bronze lion presenting an alert pose with an upright head, perky ears, a pronounced snout, and an open mouth as if roaring. The wild feline stands squarely on integral plinths beneath the fore- and hind legs. The animal's expressive visage is intricately embellished with spiraling eyes, whiskers, and a curly mane - demonstrating the expert technique practiced by ancient artisans of the Seljuk Dynasty. In addition to birds, lions were among of the most favored animals of the Near East, and this example with its bold form, vivid details, and gorgeous green and russet patina is exceptional indeed! Size: 2.25" L x 1.5" H (5.7 cm x 3.8 cm)
