Description:

Near East, Byzantine Empire / Islamic, Medieval period, ca. 11th century CE. An interesting pair of cubic pottery vessels with thick walls and somewhat shallow basins, they are both quite hefty and dense. The weight of both pieces suggest that remaining upright was important - perhaps these were burners for incense or oil, and similar censers have been found throughout the Near East from at least 800 BCE and similar vessels are still used today. The exteriors are unglazed and etched with geometric and linear patterning. Size: 4" L x 4.5" W x 4.5" H (10.2 cm x 11.4 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: Private Greenwood Village, Colorado, USA collection, via inheritance; Leota Furlong Agett Persian Pottery collection, acquired in Tehran, Iran in the early 1960s
