Description:

Near East / Central Asia, Afghanistan to Iran, Islamic culture, Medieval period, ca. 11th to 13th century CE. A leaded-bronze mortar and pestle; the mortar cast into an octagonal shape with ring handles to the sides. The eight-sided shape is a popular choice for mortars because it represents the Islamic eight-pointed star, Rub el Hizb, which would imbue power to the substances being prepared within. The pestle and mortar show signs of use and are covered with a dark patina. Such implements were used for domestic and culinary tasks - and the more ornate mortars were often used by the wealthy or respected professions that specialized in medicine and alchemy! Size of mortar: 7" Diameter x 4.5" H (17.8 cm x 11.4 cm)
