Description:

Roman, Eastern Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. An ensemble of 11 mold-formed pottery oil lamps exhibiting forms from across the Eastern Roman Empire. One lamp has a discoid body with a wide fill hole and a pierced handle. One slipper-form lamp has raised stippling around the shoulder and a petaloid motif within the tondo, and a discoid lamp features ovolo shoulders and a raised bird within the tondo. Two lamps have tapered bodies with linear motifs around the shoulders. Two lamps bear wide handles behind broad fill holes, and the two remaining lamps have tab-shaped thumb rests. Size of largest: 4.25" L x 2.3" W (10.8 cm x 5.8 cm)

  • Condition: Repair to handle of one discoid lamp, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines; remaining ten lamps are intact and very good. All items have nicks and abrasions, softening to some finer details, char marks to wick spouts, and fading to pigment. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
