Description:

East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A fine gathering of 11 cast leaded-bronze belt components with raised zoomorphic creatures and traces of gilding across the obverse surfaces. Ten panels are rectangular in form and display highly stylized mythical creatures with flowing fur, lengthy tails, and sizable heads, and nine of the ten still retain their original backing plates on the verso. The largest rectangular panel features a curved edge on one shorter end and a large creature in low relief on the front. Mottled green, brown, turquoise-hued patina envelops each component. Size of largest: 2.8" L x 1.7" W (7.1 cm x 4.3 cm)

  • Condition: Repair to corner of one smaller panel with light adhesive residue along backside break line. Largest item and two smaller panels have losses to back panels as shown. All items have minor abrasions and nicks to obverse faces and peripheries, with light encrustations, and softening to some finer details. Great earthen deposits, traces of gilding, and patina throughout.
