Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A striking set of earrings constructed with pairs of 93.5% silver wire loops. Each loop has spiraling terminals that coil around the opposite side. From each of the smaller loops hangs a miniature pendant shaped like a bearded axe head (skeggox in Old Norse) with a thick butt end, narrow socketing shaft, and vertical blade with drooping lower points. One face of each axe pendant is stamped with petite circular impressions between zigzagging peripheral registers. A gorgeous accessory for any collection! Size of each (both are relatively similar): 1.75" W x 3.3" H (4.4 cm x 8.4 cm); quality of silver: between 92% and 93.5%; total weight: 20.2 grams.

  • Condition: Can be made wearable with modern ear wires. Slight bending to forms of large loops, small loops, and axe head pendants, with chipping to lower blade tip of one axe head, otherwise intact and very good. Smooth patina throughout and nice preservation of stamped motifs on axe heads.
