Description:

Western Europe, Viking to Medieval Period, ca. 10th to 13th century CE. An aged iron short sword with most of the blade intact! The double-edged blade tapers from a broad ricasso to a pointed tip with a prominent fuller groove down the center. One quillon of the cross guard protrudes to the side and the short tang extends from the blade. A bone or wood grip and pommel may have once covered the tang. A faint raised pattern, perhaps a scrolling foliate motif, is visible on one side of the rectangular guard. A thick black patina envelops the sword. At one time this certainly was a prized weapon and would make an impressive display! Size: 13.375" L x 3" W (34 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000; ex-Andy Garcia collection
