Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A cast copper pendant that symbolizes "Mjolnir," the all-powerful hammer wielded by the god Thor. This pendant is a stylized version of the weapon with a crescent shaped head, slender shaft, flattened finial with a suspension loop. Thor was the Norse god of thunder, lightning, storms, and strength, and was also charged with the protection of mankind. Such a pendant was likely worn to give the wearer protect in life and death.   • Condition: Bending to the shaft as shown. Chip to the crescent blade edge. Suspension loop is intact and green and dark patina throughout.
