Description:

Western Europe, Southern Spain, Granada, Nasrid dynasty, ca. 1232 to 1492 CE. An octagonal ceramic tile from the Islamic period glazed in blue, white, and yellow arabesque interlacing patterns surrounding a heraldic shield. This combination of motifs suggests the tile was made in the Iberian Peninsula during the Nasrid Dynasty. The Islamic Nasrid kingdom ruled over the Emirate of Granada in the Iberian Peninsula during the late Middle Ages, maintained diplomatic and trade relations with various European powers despite intermittent conflicts, leading to a cultural exchange. Nasrid rulers adorned the palace's walls, ceilings, and doors with intricate ceramic tiles bearing their coat of arms which was an escutcheon shield with a bend (band running from the upper corner), as shown on this tile. Size: 7.25" Diameter x 1.25" W (18.4 cm x 3.2 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
