Central Asia or Eastern Iran, Samanid Empire, likely Nishapur, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. This is a lovely earthenware bowl with abstract green and brown motifs, known as splash-sgraffito. The bowl rests on a ring foot, and the thick walls rise steeply up to a thick rim. The interior and exterior surfaces have a white slip incised with stylized curvilinear and crosshatched patterns, then blobs or splashes of color are applied to the surface with a transparent glaze on top, and then the whole piece is fired - with these colored pigments running and dripping to produce the streaky color. The exterior has good remains of the white slip that was applied before the sgraffito. Size: 7.75" Diameter x 2.375" H (19.7 cm x 6 cm)
This bowl was part of the Ebrahim Rokhsar collection, an esteemed collector with similar pieces gifted to the Brooklyn Museum in his honor, please see Brooklyn Museum website accession number: 1995.187.5.

- Condition: Repaired and restored from approximately 6 large pieces, with new material infill along break lines and added to gaps. A fourth of the base is new material with overpainting on interior. New material along rim in two areas, with overpainting. Surface chips and abrasions. Good preservation to sgraffito motifs.
