Description:

Central Asia or Eastern Iran, Samanid Empire, likely Nishapur, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. This is a nice example of an earthenware bowl glazed with splash-sgraffito or abstract green and brown motifs upon an incised ground. The bowl rests on a ring foot, and the thick walls rise steeply up to a flared rim. The exterior has good remains of the white slip that was applied before the sgraffito was added to the interior. Inside the basin, the white slip was incised with stylized curvilinear and geometric patterns, then blobs or splashes of the green, brown, and ochre yellow colors were applied to the surface with a transparent glaze on top, and then the whole piece was fired - with these colored pigments running and dripping to produce the streaked and seemingly "splashed" color placement. Size: 7.75" Diameter x 2.375" H (19.7 cm x 6 cm)

This bowl was part of the Ebrahim Rokhsar collection, an esteemed collector with similar pieces gifted to the Brooklyn Museum in his honor, please see Brooklyn Museum website accession number: 1995.187.5
