Description:

Near East, Iran, Samanid Dynasty, Nishapur or Samarqand, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A steep-sided bowl standing on a diminutive round foot, brightly decorated with abstract motifs in earthy red, dark green, pale blue, yellow, and black that has been slipped underneath a white glaze. The exterior is also white-glazed with linear red bands. The foot is unslipped and unglazed, revealing fired red pottery. Size: 9.4" W x 5" H (23.9 cm x 12.7 cm)

Samanid potters invented slip-painted ware, achieving a nice clarity of design. They used a white englobe (a thin slip wash) to cover red earthenware and then painted various designs in colorful pigment mixed with slip. Adding slip to the pigment prevented it from running.
