Middle East/Western Asia, Persia (Iran), ca. 10th to 14th century CE. A beautiful cast copper alloy sprinkler vessel, made for disseminating sweet-smelling perfume and incense. The body is spherical and faceted, decorated with regularly-spaced incised motifs. An incised band of what appears to be stylized Kufic script is around the shoulder, just below the tightly corseted neck. The mouth is a slightly concave disc, its surface pierced through seven times to create a sprinkler effect; below it are seven projecting studs on the neck of the vessel. A beautiful piece of craftsmanship from the medieval Islamic world! Size: 3.05" W x 5.3" H (7.7 cm x 13.5 cm)
