Description:

Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 10th to 14th century CE. A lethal looking iron arrowhead with a socketed tang. Two long barbs or fins point downward from the blade like wings, and fittingly, this is known as a swallowtail type of arrowhead. The top of the socket is twisted, a design also found in earlier Roman and Byzantine arrows. These barbed arrowheads were deadly weapons that were often used for hunting large game or taking down the horses of mounted cavalry. Size: 3.5" L x 1.25" W (8.9 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
