Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A stunning pair of heavy cast bronze earrings, each of an elaborate, identical form - like a flower before it has budded, with its four petals curled inward. Each petal of the flower has zoomorphic qualities: the graceful neck and wings of birds on two sides, and the nested, cobra neck form on the other two. Large earrings of this style are found in elite Khmer graves and also on Khmer bronze statues. Indeed, many of the bronze statues from the royal palace at Angkor feature huge earrings with the earlobes stretched from their weight. Size: 1.35" W x 2.55" H (3.4 cm x 6.5 cm); 4.4" H (11.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Samuel Eilenberg collection, New York City, USA, 1950-1970, purportedly ex-Brooklyn Museum of Art
