Medieval Near East/Western Asia, Persia (Iran), Nishapur, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A fine set of three wheel-thrown pottery bowls with circular feet, carinated shoulders, and inward-leaning rims that surround the deep basins. The first bowl features a cream-glazed basin surface with a sextet of green spirals of varying sizes within the center. The second bowl exhibits white, blue, and yellow ringlets surrounding the interior rim, a maroon ground, and yellow and blue spirals surrounded by concentric triangular peaks in the center. The largest bowl bears a basin filled with grassy green glaze and a quartet of fineline spirals inside the middle. Size of largest (green basin): 11.125" W x 3.375" H (28.3 cm x 8.6 cm)

Nishapur, located on the plateau at the center of Iran, was a seat of governmental power in the medieval Islamic world as well as a great trading city along the Silk Road until it was completely destroyed by the Mongols in 1221. Its pottery is some of the most unique and beautiful we see from this time period.
