Asian. Central Asia, India, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A wonderful carved stele of Vishnu, one of the principal deities of Hinduism, known as the preserver in the Hindu trinity (Trimurti) which also includes Brahma and Shiva. Here he is depicted holding his traditional attributes: a Kaumodaki gada (mace) in his upper right hand, a Sudarshana Chakra (discus) in his lower right hand, a Panchajanya shankha (conch) in his upper left hand, and a padma (lotus flower) in his lower left hand. He wears an elaborate headdress, large ear ornaments, and an elegantly designed pectoral that cascades over his nude chest. His facial features and bodily contours are intricately carved. The piece shows many places where there is evidence of period red pigment made from cinnabar. Size: 9.5" W x 16.5" H (24.1 cm x 41.9 cm)
