South Asia, India, Middle Kingdom period, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A hand-carved stone fragment depicting an elegant female figure, perhaps an apsara, a consort to a deity like Vishnu or Shiva. The woman wears a flowing skirt, a lengthy necklace that drapes between hemispherical breasts, additional finery on her ears, and a tall, peaked crown. According to Indian religions, apsaras are the consorts of Gandharvas (the court musicians of Indra) and dance to the music played by their Gandharvas. Size: 6.3" L x 3.5" W x 11.25" H (16 cm x 8.9 cm x 28.6 cm)
