Description:

South Asia, India, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A beautiful head of the Hindu deity Vishnu, a fragment from a larger statue - carved from a pink sandstone. He wears a serene expression, almond shaped eyes, and remains of a small nose and full lips. Crowning his head is a tall headdress and remains of crimson-orange pigment covers the surface and appears to have been added sometime after. The head is carved to be nearly three-dimensional, the very verso is flattened, as if this was a high relief carving from a wall or temple niche. Size: 3.5" L x 4.5" W x 6.5" H (8.9 cm x 11.4 cm x 16.5 cm); 12.5" H (31.8 cm) on included custom stand.
