Description:

Central Asia, India, Rajasthan, ca. 10th to 11th century CE. A stone sculpture, possibly from a column or made to decorate a wall, showing a scene of male nudes in an elaborate architectural setting. A central nude male figure holding a scepter sits in the Mudra of peace, with the hand held out, the palm facing outwards. Two nude young men peek out from the columns on either side of him. They stand on a beautifully-decorated platform above three other nude figures, one of whom may be the Buddha based on what looks like a large ushnisha atop his head. This is a playful representation from a rarely-seen artistic tradition. Size: 6" W x 10.5" H (15.2 cm x 26.7 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Earl Stendahl/Alfred Stendhal collection, purchased in London from Spinks in the 1950s or 1960s
