Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A simple thurible, a cast-bronze censer suspended from three bronze chains. Each chain is composed of several bronze links below a bronze ring, and above the first ring is a second ring with a projecting suspension hook on top. The body of the hemispheric vessel has a petite rim around the top as well as a trio of protruding triangular legs on the bottom. The rim one had a lid with petite perforations to allow the incense smell to escape, and the chain would allow the thurible to be swung during religious ceremonies. Size (body): 3.4" W x 2.375" H (8.6 cm x 6 cm); (w/ chain & hook extended): 14.5" H (36.8 cm).
