Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land or possibly Balkan region, Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th to 13th century CE. A forged-iron mace head of spherical form bearing dozens of raised nodules. The hollow interior cavity was meant to hold the end of a wooden shaft and the nodules were intended to focus the majority of the blow onto a miniscule area, thus causing the maximum amount of damage. Smooth patina envelops the surfaces of this weapon. Size: 2.25" Diameter x 1.875" H (5.7 cm x 4.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
