Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand / Burma (Myanmar), Mon kingdoms / Pagan Kingdom, ca. 10th to 13th century CE. A collection of 3 mold-made pottery Buddhist votive plaques, mold made from ceramic. All three depict a seated flanked by bodhisattvas. Votive tablets were often made by monks and sold to pilgrims to serve as both a worthy offering at a special site, and as souvenirs. The oval shape of the tablet is modeled after the leaves from the sacred Bodhi tree - individual leaves from bodhi trees were sometimes even impressed into the back of the clay tablet as well. Pottery plaques were probably first crafted at Bodh Gaya, in Northeastern India and sold as mementos to pilgrims who visited the site, often traveling into the Mon kingdoms and later Pagan Kingdom (modern day Burma / Thailand), where similar plaques were also produced. Size: 3" L x 2" W (7.6 cm x 5.1 cm)
