Description:

Byzantium, ca. 9th to 13th century CE. This is a collection of small crosses from this period, each with unique and interesting decoration. One is silver. These objects were made at a time when tremendous effort and innovation went into producing art with Christian themes. Items like these would have been owned by individuals, some of them probably acquired from artisans at key stops along the road on a pilgrimage. One particularly interesting thing to note from this collection is the range of copper alloys used to make these objects; melting down of objects to form new ones was a common practice in this time period and this likely accounts for differences in alloy ratios. Sizeof largest: 2" L x 1.75" W (5.1 cm x 4.4 cm).
