Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi culture, ca. 500 BCE to 500 CE; Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic to Post-Classic Period, ca. 550 to 1200 CE. A nice set of 2 wearable necklaces from the Manabi and Maya cultures. The first necklace is of Manabi origin and features discoid Spondylus shell beads of varying sizes, several tooth-shaped shell beads, a pair of stone paddle-shaped pendants, and a large pottery spindle whorl pendant. The second necklace is of Maya origin and bears several tubular and spherical pottery beads, several Spondylus shell beads, and a hand-built pottery head pendant; 2 modern green quartz spheres dangle off the strand terminals. Size (Manabi necklace): 24.75" L (62.9 cm); (spindle whorl pendant): 1.24" W x 1.46" H (3.1 cm x 3.7 cm); (Maya necklace): 22.25" L (56.5 cm); (face pendant): 1.76" W x 1.87" H (4.5 cm x 4.7 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas, USA collection, acquired via descent from family in Jalisco, Mexico ca. the 1940s, and imported into the US in the 1970s and 1980s

  • Condition: Both necklaces are wearable as shown and strung in modern times. Shell beads, pottery beads, and pottery pendants are ancient; stringing and green quartz beads are modern. Small nicks, abrasions, and light encrustations to some beads, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to overall forms of most beads as well as both pendants.
